What Do I Need to Install Artificial Turf?

tools to install artificial turf

We get asked this question a lot: What materials and tools do I need to install artificial turf? It is clear that the artificial turf is the main element, but let’s see what other things, such as tools or materials, are needed to install artificial turf.

We start from the basis that not all installations are the same, since it is not the same to install artificial turf on pavement as it is to install it on soil or stone ground.

Therefore, if the ground needs to be prepared, we will have to use more tools.

To Prepare the Ground:

To install artificial turf on soil or stone ground, with or without weeds, it is clear that it must be prepared and smoothed as much as possible.

And for this, we will need tools according to the work to be done. Such as a brush cutter or hoe failing that, to remove all the weeds and unwanted plants that may be there.

Once clear of weeds, the surface must be left as smooth as possible, bearing in mind that if there are many imperfections, the turf could become hollow or form wrinkles that would not look good aesthetically.

For this, we can use a first layer of fine gravel if necessary and on top of this, a layer of sand, albero type is the most recommended.

To level and compact well, we will need a roller compactor. So that we would already have the surface prepared. It is also advisable to apply a herbicide, before placing the anti-weed mesh, so you should have a sprayer backpack.

Once the ground is prepared, the installation would be the same as on any fixed surface, such as tile or concrete.

To Install the Artificial Turf:

Once we start installing the artificial turf, the main tool that the installer uses is a cutter or blade. There are some specially designed for cutting carpets or turf, but in principle, any cutter that cuts well will be sufficient.

We will have to use joint tape, which we will use precisely to join the different pieces that make up the total surface of the artificial turf.

So that these pieces are well fixed with the tape, we will apply two-component adhesive, which we will apply with a flat spatula.

Also necessary for fixing the turf are points or nails, also staple type, is valid. They are mainly placed at the ends or where it is deemed necessary.

After finishing the installation and depending on the type of artificial turf, we can apply silica sand, which we can pour directly from the bags in an approximate proportion of 1 bag of 25kg for every 10m2 of surface, at a minimum. Considering that it is usually quite cheap, I would not skimp on it.

To prime the turf well with that sand, installers usually use a grooming machine, but if you do not have one, you can use a large brush. Which in turn, will serve you for maintenance.

It should also be added that, to carry out all the work safely, it is advisable to use gloves and safety glasses.
