The<\/span> approval<\/b> of<\/span> Regulation (EU) 2023\/2055<\/a><\/strong> by the<\/span> European Commission<\/b> has generated concern<\/span> among users of artificial turf in sports fields<\/b>. Sensationalist media headlines have led to the belief that<\/span> its use was completely prohibited<\/b>. However,<\/span> that statement IS NOT TRUE<\/b> since what has been approved is the manufacture and marketing of microplastics.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is essential to explain that<\/span> this regulation DOES NOT AFFECT artificial turf<\/b>, but focuses on<\/span> regulating the substrate used in sports artificial turf facilities<\/b>, specifically, the rubber or SBR infill, mostly from discarded tires.<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to clarify all possible doubts that have arisen, from<\/span> GardenStore<\/a><\/strong> we are going to<\/span> detail the most relevant factors<\/b> of this regulation and to what extent it affects the<\/span> installation of artificial turf in sports fields<\/a><\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

Regulation (EU) 2023\/2055: Artificial Turf in Sports Fields<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The New Regulations Do not Affect Decorative Artificial Turf<\/b><\/h3>\n

The<\/span> first and most important point<\/b> that we must make is that the EU REACH Regulation<\/span> does not concern decorative artificial turf<\/b>, that is, the one that is installed in public areas, hotels, restaurants, businesses or domestically: in houses, gardens, terraces…<\/span> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The installation of this type of artificial turf<\/span> does not require the use of the microplastic infill mentioned above<\/b> and, therefore,<\/span> its use and installation remains the same<\/b>. Moreover,<\/span> decorative artificial turf<\/b> has become a<\/span> sustainable and ecological option<\/b> due to the<\/span> low water consumption<\/b> it requires for its maintenance.<\/span><\/p>\n

It Only Affects the Substrate Used in Artificial Turf on Sports Fields<\/b><\/h3>\n

After October 17, 2031<\/b>, infill granules considered microplastics may not be used for new artificial turf sports fields. However,<\/span> the installation of<\/b> sports artificial turf fields<\/span> that use<\/span> more sustainable and ecological alternatives<\/b> with organic fillings such as<\/span> cork, wood or olive pits<\/b> will be permitted.<\/span><\/p>\n
