Step-by-step Artificial Grass Installation

In this sense, if you are entering the world of artificial grass, we will explain step by step how to perform an artificial grass installation on a surface of soil or sand, which is the most complex situation you can encounter.

Preparation of the Land for Artificial Grass

  • The land must be cleared by removing all plant debris using a hoe.
  • Spray the entire area with herbicide to prevent weeds from reappearing once the artificial grass is installed.
  • Pour sand or gravel on the ground to level it and help with surface drainage. With this, we ensure that the surface is flat and level, without holes, so that the final result is optimal.
  • We must water the surface abundantly so that when passing a roller, we can compact the soil and leave it homogeneous. This step is important to leave the ground firm and prepared for the placement of artificial grass.

Placement of the Anti-Weed Mesh

  • Extend and correctly position the anti-weed mesh, securing it with nails meter by meter. Make a fold on the edges to make sure it is well attached to the ground. For a correct installation, it is advisable to overlap the ends of the mesh strips, overlapping them by approximately 10 cm.

Plan the Arrangement of the Artificial Grass on the Surface

  • It’s time to spread the artificial grass rolls on the anti-weed mesh. Watch out! It is essential to ensure that the different cuts are placed with the fibers in the same direction.
  • Before joining the pieces, we recommend trimming the edges with a cutter so that, in this way, you eliminate any imperfections and make sure they are straight.

Installation of the Pieces of Grass

  • Place the pieces of artificial grass, one next to the other, leaving a separation of 0.5 cm between them, so that the joints are not noticeable when combing the union of both pieces with your hand.
  • Cut the surplus from the perimeter and around obstacles. We advise you to mark with a cutter approximately every 30 cm and, if possible, have a support tool to make the cut carefully. It is important to measure before you make the cuts in difficult areas such as trees, lights or showers.
  • We can join the pieces of grass using self-adhesive tape or with joining tape.
    • Extend the self-adhesive tape over the joints of the pieces. Then, lift the joints of each piece and place the tape underneath, between the two pieces of grass. Remove the protective sheet from the adhesive on the side of one of the joints and put the grass on top. Repeat the same operation with the piece of grass on the other side. Both pieces should be perfectly joined.
    • In the case of the joining tape, place it under the pieces of grass and apply the mixture resulting from combining the elements of the two-component adhesive kit. Spread it on the joining tape, using a comb. Finally, in the same way as in the previous case, join the pieces of artificial grass on each side.
  • Fix the grass with staples, leaving one meter of separation between each one. You must be especially careful in the perimeter and the joining areas.
  • Spread 4-5 kg of silica sand per square meter, over the entire surface and spread the sand by passing a stiff bristle or electric brush in the opposite direction to the fibers, lifting the hair.

And… Ready! You will have finished the installation of artificial grass on soil or sand.
