5 Steps for You to Install your Artificial Turf Yourself

install artificial turf

Having natural green areas can be prohibitive in some cases due to their cost and maintenance. The ideal alternative is artificial turf. As specialists in the field, we have various classes and sizes of rolls so you can create a garden tailored to your needs. In addition, we not only advise you on how to do it properly, but we also show you how to install it.

1. Conditioning of the area

Once you have purchased the artificial turf, the next step is to prepare the surface. To do this, it is necessary to take into account whether the ground is soil or cement. Each case is different, as indicated below:

  • On hard surfaces such as tiles or concrete, the only essential thing is to clean the area so that there are no irregularities.
  • In soil, plant remains must be removed, a herbicide applied, and the drainage system created with gravel and sand. The evacuation of water must be taken into account to level and subsequently compact.

2. Anti-weed layer

Once the soil is prepared, this option requires the incorporation of a geotextile mesh, which does not represent a greater degree of difficulty. Simply mount the strips over the entire surface with a separation of about 5 cm and some on top of others. You can fix them using metal staples.

3. Placement of artificial turf

In this step, organization must prevail, which means having a small diagram with the corresponding measurements. This is done as a strategy to use the material efficiently, locate it as we want and avoid possible setbacks.

The rolls must be placed in the same direction as the pile of the turf. When it is extended, the cuts of the perimeter and the obstacles present in the area are made (trees, posts, etc.). The adjustments are subsequent and can be placed on top of the drains already installed.

4. Glue the pieces

For this procedure, lift the joints about 30 cm and then place the joining strips that have an approximate length to the pieces of turf. Remove the part that covers the adhesive, join the joints carefully so that they fit and then make the relevant adjustments.

5. Professional finish

The final step is to add a filling to the turf, brush the surface and water the materials so that they settle. Although silica sand (5 kg/m2) is not mandatory, it has certain benefits. Likewise, brushing with a machine or metal brush is done against the grain.

The installation of artificial turf is a task that can be achieved with a little dedication. If you want to do it yourself, we advise you at all times, of course, we can also do it for you and have the experience of our staff.
